According to Searchswap.com, you don’t need a formal education to secure a career in video game testing.  Only a high school diploma is necessary.  However, you do need to be industrious and treat game testing as a job, as opposed to a leisure activity

While video game testing jobs have a number of benefits, it’s also important to ask yourself about all the aspects of a career in this field.  Jobs in the video game industry require you to play a wide variety of games for long periods of time.  Oftentimes, this may mean you are asked to test a game you are not that interested in.  So, in reality, even this exciting career is like most others.

The fact that you will be able to play video games for hours on end is a huge draw for many.  In fact, many people enter the field out of a pure interest in games alone, but what gaming companies are looking for goes a bit deeper.  Even if you work from your home, you may be required to go to an office to collaborate with programmers and designers working on related projects.

Not all games are quick fixes.  In fact, most testers will spend days, perhaps months, on one game to make sure all the bugs and glitches have been caught.  Some game testers find themselves in the publishing industry, as publishing and production are both big parts of gaming.

According to Ben Silverman, article writer for Yahoo! Games, video game testing is one of the few career fields that are blossoming in the face of a crumbling U.S. economy.  According to Silverman, a lot of people are drawn to the glamour associated with video game testing.  But in reality, he says, game testing is not going to gain you recognition.  In fact, you may not always work with a full version of a game.  Instead, you may be tasked to play small pieces of a game before it is put together fully.

According to gaming experts, the video game industry is worth more than $50 billion each year, and it is steadily growing.  The reason video game testers have become a hot commodity is because companies cannot afford to release games with bugs.  It would cost millions, if not more to make up for releasing a faulty game.  So it makes more sense to spend a little money on testers than it does to shell out millions for replacements.

Jobs in the video game industry are plentiful, but there are a number of things you must do to increase your chances of being hired.  A lot of testers take on freelance assignments and are able to build a list of references from them.  This helps build credibility, and it looks good to have contacts in the video game industry.

Reviewing Video Games

To demonstrate that you are knowledgeable in gaming, you may want to consider writing reviews of games that are already on the market.  Doing so shows that you’ve done your research and know something about the game you are playing.  Also, it shows employers you have the research skills needed to learn about a wide variety of games.

The writing aspect of video gaming is particularly important.  Not only does it allow you to document your findings when playing a video game, but it also fine tunes your communication skills, which are particularly important.

Figuring out how to get paid to play video games is the easiest part of getting into the field.  You already know you have the passion to succeed in the field.  Now, all you need is the knowledge and wherewithal to put your passion to work.

MySpace, the social networking site, may be devoted to helping you get to know people, but it also offers information that may benefit the video game tester.  For example, it has a searchable online job bank that taps into Simplyhired.com.  The search engine hides information that is not relevant to careers in video game testing, but it is a great resource for video game testing hopefuls.

Testing XBOX 360 games comes with a whole new set of benefits.  XBOX is owned by Microsoft, so by working on XBOX games, you essentially gain knowledge of Microsoft products as well.  Not to mention the fact that this experience translates to other jobs in the field, and may actually help you get a better position in the game testing field.

Video Game Testing Critical Thinking Skills

When you get paid to test video games, it’s important to stay up to date on recent technology.  You should have at least a basic knowledge of html coding and other programming languages.  You should be eager to brush up on old programming languages and learn new ones that hit the market.

So how exactly do you get paid to play video games?  First, you must stay current on the latest video games, which often means playing new games to find problems other testers may not have seen.  Also, you must have strong critical thinking skills and the ability to analyze complex concepts thoroughly.
